Perineal Hygiene, Acid Mantle & Hygeva
What is the benefit of Acid Mantle over skin?
Skin protects all the organs from the harmful external environment. For a good healthy life, pH balance of the skin is very important. This is achieved by a thin acidic film enveloping the skin, called the “acid mantle. Acid mantle protects skin from bacterial/ fungal/ viral infection & other substances that may harm the skin.
What is pH?
pH is a scale for measurement of acid or basic nature of the substance. pH of skin is between 4 to 5.5 which is acidic in nature.
What is the pH of intimate area and how this pH is affected?
pH of intimate area is between 5 and 5.5. An increase in the skin surface pH increases its susceptibility to infections or skin damage and hence diseases. There are other factors also that make acid mantle in the perineal/ vulval area week or expose your intimate area to the harmful micro-organism like-
Unhygienic conditions – Transfer harmful bacteria/ fungus to the perennial area where they overgrow and cause foul odor, rashes, itching & infection
Menstruation- Menstruation takes away lactobacilli, which can alkalinize the pH of the perineal area and hence predisposes this area to infections.
Menopause- During the menopausal years (45–55 years), skin in the perineal area becomes dry and thin, which augments itching/ pruritus. Scratching the area affects the acid mantle making it vulnerable to infection.
Pregnancy: Pregnancy is the condition of low immunity and it may lead to urinary and reproductive tract infections which damages the acid mantle. The protruding abdomen during pregnancy is a adding factor as it creates difficulties in maintaining perineal hygiene and hence leading to infection.
Obesity: The large abdomen and overhanging folds of obese women pose problems of disturbance of the acid mantle due to the inability to maintain perineal hygiene and can lead to chronic inflammation/ rashes/ lesions of this area.
Talcum powder, antiperspirants, wipes and deodorants: These block the sweat glands and may result in contact sensitization and irritant action and strip off the vulva & perineum from its moisture causing extreme dryness. Dryness leads to irritant contact dermatitis due to overaggressive cleansing.
Sexual activity – unhygienic sexual activity disturbs the natural environment of intimate area, and this can predispose women to increased risk of infections
Sweat & Tight Clothing – Heat & Humidity causes sweat and this increases the moisture in this area and hence promotes the growth of "unfriendly" bacteria. Tight undergarments or jeans for prolonged periods aggravate the condition.
Diabetes and acid skin mantle: Patients with diabetes mellitus secrete a lower amount of lactic acid on the skin surface. This increases the pH of skin which favors the fungal infections.
Antibiotic therapy- which you may have taken for infection in some other part of the body can also disturb the friendly bacteria in vagina & acid mantle of skin as well.
What other problems can occur with change in pH of intimate area?
Change in pH of intimate area disturbs the acid mantle of the vulval & perineal area leading to rashes, itching, and inflammation in the intimate area called as vulvitis and vaginitis.
What is vaginitis?
Vagina is the internal genital organ that connects with the outer intimate parts. Vagina is host of numerous friendly bacteria like lactobacillus that secrete lactic acid to maintain acidic pH in the vagina. Some harmful bacteria are also present in the vagina but they remain inactive due to acidic pH of the vagina. When the pH balance is disturbed these harmful bacteria overgrow & cause infection called Vaginitis. This is exhibited by redness of the inner layer of vagina, rashes, irritation & discharge milky/ cheesy discharge from the vagina.
Why is ordinary Soap not suitable for washing of perineal (intimate) cleansing?
Soaps have an alkaline pH that disturb the delicate balance of acid mantle of intimate area and also pH of the vagina. It increases the risk of irritation & infection.
What is Hygeva?
Hygeva is a wash specially formulated to maintain hygiene & acid mantle of the intimate area of females.
Hygeva balances pH of the intimate area, maintains moisture, smoothens the areas, prevents dryness, itching, nourishes skin & kills harmful micro-organisms.
